Homer 1 RNA and protein levels are generally high in the human central nervous system and substantially lower in other peripheral tissues. In the brain, it is localised in post-synaptic domains of various forebrain regions. In mouse, available transcriptomic and proteomic data agree in showing notable expression in olfactory, hippocampal, striatal and cortical areas.
In the current slides, strong diffuse/synaptic-type immunostaining of synaptic fields is noticed throughout the entire forebrain. In the brainstem, the staining is rather limited to a few gray-matter reached region, like the substantia nigra, interpeduncular nucleus, periaqueductal gray matter, dorsal part of the medulla around the fourth ventricle (incl. the pericoerulear-parabrachial region).
