The Human Protein Atlas has been on the forefront of spatial omics for the last 20 years, providing extensive information on all proteins in all major tissues and cells. Recent developments in spatial transcriptomics enable mapping of gene expression with sub-micrometer resolution. These technological breakthroughs provide detailed and complete views on biological and pathological processes and most likely will change the future of diagnostics. The history, current status and future perspectives of spatial omics are also summarized in a review article and the special issue celebrating CellPress 50th anniversary. |
